Nelson City Council divested its community portfolio to Kāinga Ora with final settlement in March 2021. As a result of this process, the Council agreed to establish a Housing Reserve using the proceeds ($12 million).

The National Policy Statement (NPS) on Urban Development Capacity requires Tasman and Nelson Councils to work together to provide sufficient housing and business capacity for the “Nelson Main Urban Area”.
