Key projects

Some key projects implemented since the strategy was adopted are Heritage Grants, assistance with costs around resource consents for heritage properties, and targeted rates rebates on heritage properties. Grants are available to preserve our heritage.

Heritage promotion and awareness

Identifying heritage sites, taonga, heritage houses and heritage collections is an ongoing project so we have an accurate inventory of significant heritage assets in Nelson. The Nelson Resource Management Plan lists items protected in its appendices including notable trees and heritage precincts

Archeological records are listed on the  New Zealand Archaeological Society database of sites, kept by the Department of Conservation.

Nelson has an abundance of heritage to celebrate and display. Heritage signs and information boards can be found across the city.  Maps of Nelson's heritage walks have been developed for walkers and cyclists or for access by car or bus.

It is easy to find out more about the stories of Nelson.  Visit the Nelson Provincial Museum in Trafalgar Street or their research facility at Isel Park which houses an excellent library and large collection of archival photographs.

Visit Founders Heritage Park which tells the stories of Nelson 1880-1950 in a charming park setting.  A number of Historic Places Trust Category One houses and woodlands can be visited including Broadgreen Historic House, Isel Park, Melrose House, Fairfield House and Warwick House.

There are many heritage organisations actively encouraging participation in heritage activities. Nelson Heritage Advisory Group has regular public meetings with speakers as does the Nelson Historical Society .The Nelson Genealogy Society helps trace ancestors buried in our local cemeteries.  The local branch of the Historic Places Trust has interesting information on listed sites and properties in this region. The Antique and Retro Extravaganza in March each year is one of several events that celebrate heritage.

Heritage protection, conservation and maintenance

Ensuring our heritage can be enjoyed now and in the future takes work. Lack of maintenance of heritage buildings and sites could result in them falling into disrepair.

Regulatory protection is provided through the Nelson Resource Management Plan which determines how listed items protected in its appendices should be managed and whether council consents will be needed when new building work is done.

Asset Management Plans set out how Council fulfils its obligations managing heritage assets in its care.

Design guides are available to assist property owners in areas of heritage significance. Built Heritage Grants are available along with a rates rebate and resource consent subsidies for owners of listed heritage.

How progress with the strategy is measured

When the strategy was adopted in November 2006, the Heritage Strategy Implementation Group was set up to monitor the progress of implementing the Whakatu Nelson Heritage strategy's action plan.  Three yearly reviews are required and a report on progress was presented to the group in 2008. Future reviews will measure the Strategy implementation against criteria such as the annual ratepayers survey, feedback from heritage agencies, owners and professionals and the amount of funding secured for heritage conservation projects.
