Open fires in Nelson

An open fire includes any small-scale fuel burning device or construction installed in or attached to any building that is capable of burning solid fuel, but excludes any enclosed burner. Examples of open fires include fireplaces, open hearths, visors, and ‘Jetmaster’ – type fireplaces.

From 1 January 2008, use of open fires is banned in Nelson and open fires cannot be replaced with enclosed burners. ‘Jetmaster’- type insert fireplaces can continue to be used up until 1 January 2013.
